Windows Vista on the PS3, Qemu 0.9.1 Bios Rev 1.171
Posted on July 31st, 2008 | by admin |
It’s a 100% PS3 based emulation of Microsoft Windows Vista. Its super slow, but it works.
Song: Seether- The Gift
Installed On Xubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04
How To:
-Install Qemu 0.9.1
-Use vlite to shrink a Vista Image, and apply the 256mb memory patch
-Install Vista on your Computer using the vlite image with Qemu and Bochs Bios Rev 1.171 by sshwarts (It took my computer 12 hours.)
-Copy the .IMG Made from Bochs/Qemu to your PS3′s HDD
-Open Terminal where the Vista IMG is located
-type qemu -hda vista.img -m 256 -L “Location to Rev 1.171 directory, Drag n Drop” -cpu pentium3
It will take about 25 min to fully boot (network connection and audio show up)

dude 256MB of ram …
dude 256MB of ram on the ps3 operating vista for sure will take for ever!

actually YOU are …
actually YOU are wrong!! the RAM isn’t the problem. The shear power of the CPU’s, GPU are enough to breeze through vista……. however the PS3 runs at 128 bit and vista is running at 32 bit so the PS3 is having to back convert everything… thus causing it to run like crap.

No, you’re wrong. …
No, you’re wrong. That 128bit crap means absolutely nothing. There is no such thing as back-converting bits. You wanna know what bits are? There integers used to calculate how much MEMORY THE PROCESSOR CAN ADDRESS.
2 to the power of 32 is 4294967296, and that is essentially the amount of bytes 32 bits procs can address.
2 to the power of 128 is 34028236692093846346337460743177…….
VISTA is NOT running straight from the PS3′s hardware. It’s running from a software layer which is very slow

And last time I …
And last time I checked, the PS3′s Cell PPC main proc is labeled PPC64 making it a 64bit proc. This is completely useless due to the fact the PS3 only has 256MB of RAM and bits make no difference in speed.
If my PC has 6GB but I’m using a 32bit proc/OS, only 4GB of it is in use. To take advantage of the extra amount of memory, I need a proc that can address up to 64 bits of memory.

well i suggest you …
well i suggest you check again the PS3 runs a TOTAL of 128bit processor.
Using google to figure out that bits are integers used to calculate how much memory the processor can address does nothing to impress me. further more you basically explained why the PS3 only needs 256MB of RAM (probably without even realizing it) hence arguing against your own point! I guess the web page you googled didnt explain that the more processing power you have (more bits) the more efficient you memory usage…

… if you over …
… if you over clock a processor you get better speed and all around better performance. How is this?? You haven’t increased your memory? No you have made your processor more efficient at “processing” the memory it has available. I do agree your point that the sub frame used to run vista will also cause lag but my attack was on your comment that 256MB of RAM was insufficient when you clearly didn’t look at the larger picture. And you can back convert bits. THROUGH EMULATION!!!!!!

I googled? That’s …
I googled? That’s thrown out so loosely that it’s pathetic to read people saying it. What page, where is this page?
Overclocking a processor increases the rated speed at which it can process data. Bits don’t have anything to do with clock speed, again they are integers and it’s only common sense. If you needed google to look that up, well that explains you have no idea what you’re talking about.
BITS DO NOT DEFINE PROCESSING POWER. I guess you believe everything some webpage tells you.

Bits have not been …
Bits have not been used to define processors for a long time. Bits are used to define the amount of memory the processor can address. When you can overclock bits, I’ll stand back and let you be king of the hill, but there is no such thing. That’s a matter of architectural difference.
If you OC your CPU, you must OC your memory as well to see the actual difference. That’s why the FSB is linked to literally every I/O in your PC. You bring up your FSB, and even your PCI port’s speed goes up.

Lastly. Let’s say I …
Lastly. Let’s say I have 2GB of main memory. On startup, I have 1GB used and this is for every time I start up the PC. If I increase the memory to 3GB, will I even see any bit of difference? No. So you’re right on that.
For all else, you’re trying to change some words into your own but you make no sense while doing so. Bits define amount of memory able to be allocated. Processor frequency defines how fast data can be assessed. Memory speed defines how fast data can be linked to/from the CPU.
