The Truth about Suicide - Part 1
Posted on May 28th, 2007 | by admin |
This video discusses information collected by the Drug Awareness Warning Network; DAWN.
DAWN is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration with the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States Government.
One thing that DAWN keeps track of is emergency room visits and suicides connected to drug and medication use.
I think you will find it shocking just how many people attempt or actually successfully complete suicide while taking psychiatric drugs. DAWN even breaks down the number of suicide related to specific categories of medications such as SSRIs, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiety medications, stimulants, etc.
We normally think that drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin as preventing suicide. Is this the case?

Taking statistics …
Taking statistics that you clearly do not understand and twisting them to justify your very skewered point of view doesn’t really make you an authority. Have you seen MRI’s of clinically depressed people? It shows a CHEMICAL IMBALANCE. ta-da!

– infrequently, …
— infrequently, but independently of the suicidal thoughts that are linked to depression itself. There was also concern (centred on Seroxat)about a risk of dependence;some users found it impossible to stop taking SSRIs because of severe withdrawal symptoms.”

According to the …
According to the British Parliament
“Almost from the outset, there was concern about two main problems with SSRIs.First, there was suspicion (initially centred on Prozac)that these drugs could induce suicidal and violent behaviour

As a teen growing …
As a teen growing up in the 80s, I clearly remember how teen suicide had reached epidemic proportions—this in a time before antidepressants had become so ubiquitous. Then in the 90s, doctors began prescribing antidepressants very readily for the first time. And guess what? Teen suicide rates dropped dramatically and still not have been as high as they were in the 80s. In essence, antidepressants have actually saved more lives than it has destroyed. You can’t argue with the statistics.

Teen suicide has …
Teen suicide has not dramatically dropped since the 80s. It’s dropped about 10 percent.
Antidepressants prescriptions have gone up 1000 percent.
If you compare the antidepressant prescriptions to decreases in suicide the figures come out to. 1 less suicide for every 10,000 antidepressant prescriptions. That doesn’t show a 1 to 1 causative relationship but 10,000 to 1 correlation.
The teen suicide rate was half of what it is now in 1950 w/ no antidepressant prescriptions.

Well, I went and pulled out my paper because I knew I would be able to cite academic sources. According to a March 18, 2006, article in the Science News, the suicide rate for youths has dropped 33% in the past 15 years. Having said that…

I also know something else: teen violence has escalated in the last 15 years. Could there be a connection? Possibly so.

Also, I’d like to …
Also, I’d like to elaborate on my situation. I am 39 and have been clinically depressed all my life. I refuse to take any antidepressant because the side effects are way too harsh. I have attempted suicide while both on and off of these meds. I’ve tried excercise, eating healthy, etc., nothing helped. And then I found one med that did help my depression…

As a matter of fact …
As a matter of fact, it’s the med doctors used to prescribe for depression back in the ’50s: opiates. I started taking hydrocodone for chronic pain and was amazed how much it helped me mentally. But there is a drawback: just like antidepressants, it seemed to numb my emotions and I no longer felt passionate about anything. So I stopped taking hydros.

you can look over the actual suicide rates on the CDC website. Search for WISQARS.
I’ve spent many hours pouring over those statistics.

Although the data …
Although the data hasn’t been being collected until recently, there is evidence that since prozac came out in the mid 80s, even though the suicide rate has been slowly declining, the attempt rates have actually gone up.
A Swedish study found this to be true.
Tricyclic antidepressants are much easier to Overdose on than SSRIs. It could be that suicide attempts are rising but completely suicides are declining simply because it’s harder to kill yourself w/ the drug.

The Drug Awareness …
The Drug Awareness Warning Network tracked 10,000 teen drug related suicides in 2004.
Not a single one of them was successful.
So, there are many many attempts to commit suicide before an actual successful attempt and the most common method of attempting suicide in teens is self poisoning.
