    Hey mantic, love your videos!!
Need some advice though, I’m thinking of making the change to single blade shaving, but cautious, because of the curly hair of black men (being black), I don’t know if single blade shaving is right for me. Are there any other black guys on here that wetshave? (single blade shave?)Is there any additional advice regarding black men, or is the information you’ve already provided suitable?

    Shaving is shaving, …
Shaving is shaving, in my opinion. Just use your intuition a little common sense. I recently switched from a mach 3 turbo to single razor, and it was a smooth transition. Been getting a great shave every time.

Syres4me- Single blade shaving is *excellent* for men of color…fewer blades are definitely better in this case. A directly against-the-grain shave pass may not be possible though; you’ll just have to try it and see.

    Are you asking how …
Are you asking how to clean the razor? Soak it in a solution of 4 parts hot water to 1 part vinegar for a couple hours, then give it a good scrubbing with a toothbrush. Ultrasonic jewerlry cleaners also work very very well. Yes, you can pull down the sides of your neck to make your skin taught if you need to, just don’t pull too hard.

Yeah, I’m black. I would recommend switching to a DE razor and try lathering your skin with olive oil and a high quality shaving cream. It works for me and my skin is baby smooth!

I can’t believe I need to learn how to shave at my age. So much technique and sophistication in a thing I thought was simple and a hassle. Great video.

I use a Mach 3. It’s the only razor I’ve ever got on with. Good video. Surprised you recommend upward strokes. I thought they gave ingrowing hairs, although I shave like that and just get a really smooth face.

    Great video series. …
Great video series. I have been shaving this way (mostly with a straight razor) for several years now. I just recently was turned onto a GEM single-edge razor, which I feel is absolutely awesome! How come no talk or videos shaving with a GEM, or other single-edge razor? I think these would be very good options for those who can’t quite get along with a DE… or in my case, just another weapon in the arsenal.

    windycity72- I …
windycity72- I admit I tend to shy away from talking about single edge razors like a GEM or an Injector, because you can’t buy them new anymore. Getting a vintage razor is always a crap-shoot.

    Hi Mantic

Thanks for the video, great series.

You comment that different razors have different characteristcs, Ijust bought a Merkur Futur, do you know what characteristics /reputation this one has ?

  18. By mantic59 on Oct 18, 2007 | Reply

    Visulube- The Futur …
Visulube- The Futur is generally well-regarded: reasonably well built and a good shaver. Some have trouble with maneuvering the head (like under the nose) and some don’t care for the “pop off” top. Check my “Adjustable Safety Razors” video for more info.

    Thanks mantic,

Also I have heard it advised from a variety of sources that shaving against the grain is not advised as it encourges ingrowing hairs, could you comment ?

I got my Merkur razor the other day, it came with blades and a brief leaflet showing how to insert them, it should really come with a shaving guide, without your guide Im sure I would have a lot more cuts on my face, so thanks again.

    visulube- Shaving …
visulube- Shaving against the grain can indeed promote ingrowns but its usually from using multi-blade cartridges (or over-stretching the skin). If you have sensitive skin you might not be able to shave against the grain but beard reduction using a single blade razor and decent lather will minimize the chances. You’ll just have to try it and find out. :)

How is double edge razors are better than cartridge ones, besides saving on the blades? Thanks for the great video. Just what I need. I hate saving and thinking going that DE route cause I’m not happy with cartridges, but I affraid of cuts.

    Also I noticed that …
Also I noticed that many people on this DE shaving forums say that shaving foams and gels in tubes, like Barbasol is complete utter garbage, and they won’t use it at all and you only need soap lather. Why is that??? I don’t like that sensation of brush on my shaved face, it irritates my skin. Is there is any other way to go about it?
